Under IRC § 45W(b), the credit amount equals the lesser of:

  • 15% of the vehicle's basis (30% for pure electric/fuel cell vehicles not powered by gas/diesel), or
  • The incremental cost of the clean vehicle over a comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle.

Up to $7,500 Credit

Applies to commercial work trucks, delivery vans, and heavy SUVs (e.g. Ford F-150 Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck, Mercedes eSprinter, Rivian R1T).

Heavy Commercial (≥ 14,000 lbs GVWR)
Up to $40,000 Credit

Applies to Class 4 through Class 8 commercial electric chassis cabs, refuse trucks, and electric semi-tractors (e.g. Freightliner eCascadia, Volvo VNR Electric).

2. Step-by-Step Stacking: § 45W Credit + Section 179 Write-Off

When stacking a clean commercial vehicle tax credit with Section 179, the IRS requires a basis reduction under IRC § 45W(e):

Assume a business purchases an $80,000 electric commercial pickup (GVWR > 6,000 lbs, 100% business use) in 2026:

3. How to Report § 45W Credits and Section 179 on Your Tax Return

To properly claim this dual tax incentive, file the following forms:

  • IRS Form 8936 (Qualified Clean Vehicle Credit): File Schedule A to calculate the commercial clean vehicle credit under IRC § 45W and report the vehicle VIN.
  • IRS Form 3800 (General Business Credit): Carry the § 45W credit from Form 8936 to Form 3800 to offset corporate or individual income tax liability.
  • IRS Form 4562 Part V (Listed Property): Report the adjusted depreciable basis ($72,500 in our example) on Line 26 and elect Section 179 expensing.
